History of Plantation Shutters

For hundreds of years people have used Plantation Shutters for their windows, mainly for added security and the protection against storms they provide

The Plantation Shutters or louvre was a developed to allow greater adjustability and light control compared to solid shutters. Wooden shutters are seen all over the world in almost every type of building. Plantation Shutters are sturdy, long lasting, have a timeless classic style, and are practically maintenance free

Historians believe that shutters were first used in ancient Greece. The first shutters are thought to be constructed with fixed louvers made out of marble. The concept of shutters then spread throughout the mediterranean and wood replaced marble as a more suitable material for production.

When the Spanish started colonizing in the Americas, they brought shutters with them. Elegant homes in the south used shutters, and the term “Plantation Shutters” is derived from this area

The name plantation is believed to relate to the cotton plantations that would generally incorporate a large homes where the plantation owner would live, so when the shutters were installed they became known as Plantation Shutters and the name was born

Shutters today are now considered to be more like a piece of furniture coming in many different colours and styles
